The best way I’ve found to do this actually requires installing a piece of software called PowerMapper (Windows only) on your computer that will show you, visually, how the site branches to different pages. The link to the software is here:

http://www.powermapper.com/download/mapper/index.htm

The 30-day trial will give you what you need to map a website less than 1,000 pages. If you have a site that links to many other sections you don’t want to map, I would recommend doing separate maps – one for each section, category, or folder of your site.

After the software is installed, go to File>New. Paste in the address of your website.

Note: If you only want a particular section of the site, then select the radio button for “Folder”. This setting is very important to get only the section of the site you want. Otherwise it maps the entire site, which will take a long time and won’t be very helpful.

Slyman Real Estate is one of the most successful real estate companies in the Knoxville metro area. Among the websites that feature their properties and serve their clients is SlymanTeam.com, a site that highlights Laura Slyman and Beth Miser. Laura and Beth are Knoxville’s youngest multi-million-dollar real estate team.

SlymanTeam.com had been part of Slyman’s website offerings, but it was due for a redesign. The site was already using WordPress, so we continued using this platform for continuity and design purposes. It also needed a few feature additions to make it more accessible to mobile devices.

Speak collaborated with Archer Design & Marketing to select and customize a responsive theme that fit the needs of Slyman Real Estate. The Alyeska theme by ThemeBlvd.com fit the bill perfectly. The ThemeBoulevard framework offers great control over customization, color selection, and page layout. The theme itself laid the foundation for the look of the site, with modifications to the styles and color schemes.

Alyeska is a responsive theme, so it modifies the content of the page to the size of the visitor’s device, including smart phones and tablets. This is quickly becoming an essential feature for markets like real estate, where website visitors are often using mobile devices to research the market to make a purchase.

The result of this redesign is a website that the team at Slyman Real Estate will find to be a great marketing tool for themselves and a useful resource for their clients and potential clients.

Trinity Baptist Church in Seneca, South Carolina had considered their need for a new website for some time. In the midst of building a new worship space, they felt it was a great opportunity to start with a fresh online presence along with a new physical presence in the community.

The church needed something they could update themselves. They wanted some media content that could feature their ministries on the front page, and they wanted the ability to expand the site as their needs grew.

Speak proposed a WordPress website built on Elegant Theme’s Chameleon design. Chameleon is a responsive design, which means it modifies its layout based on the size of the users’s screen, including tablets and smart phones.

The home page of the site features a story slider so the church can highlight ministries and events easily. Site navigation uses drop-down menus so visitors can easily access pages of the website. Various ministries and mission opportunities fill out the pages of the website. Under the media section, a calendar highlights upcoming events events. Some pages under the media section will be populated with content as it is created.

Google Apps was configured for this domain to provide the church and its staff with a powerful set of cloud-based productivity tools that includes email, calendars with sharing, contacts with sharing, documents with sharing and collaboration, and website Analytics.

Trinity Baptist Church of Seneca, South Carolina now has an online tool that helps them minister to their congregation and community in new ways.

The Google Nexus 7 tablet is the newest player in the tablet market. It’s created by Asus under the Google brand as Google’s flagship tablet device. It runs the latest version of Android for tablets, known as Jelly Bean. It is also enabled with Google Wallet capabilities, which allows the device to be used to process payments using NFC technology.

I have some experience with tablet devices. Before the Nexus 7, I owned a Nook Color, which I promptly rooted to run the full Android OS. I found the rooted Nook Color to be usable but sluggish, which frustrated me to no end. I’ve also used an iPad on a relatively limited basis.

As an avid Google fan and a person who is generally curious about new devices, I pre-ordered the Google Nexus 7 tablet from the Google Play Store. Below are my first impressions.

Ordering

On June 29, I placed my order for the 8 GB version of the Nexus 7 tablet. Ordering the device from the Google Play Store was easy and straight-forward. I already had my account established with Google, so the order was billed to my default credit card and shipped to my default address. I received notification on July 14 that my device had shipped. It wasn’t until July 16 that the tracking status was actually updated. It arrived during the afternoon of July 17, partly because I am located about 100 miles from the shipping location.

Unboxing

Some users had a difficult time with unboxing the Nexus 7 tablet. I learned from their mistakes and came to the party prepared.

It wasn’t nearly as difficult to unbox the device as the video by Gizmodo or my photo would lead you to believe. By cutting a couple of pieces of tape on the bottom of the box, the top portion and bottom portions of the box separate with little work. A plastic wrapper then needs to be removed from the Nexus 7.

Overall, the Nexus 7 feels very sturdy and more expensive than what I paid for it. The front of the device is cleanly designed. I especially like the metal trim around the outer edge of the device. The back has a nice feel to it, neither rubbery nor leathery, but somewhere in between.

Also in the box is an AC adapter, micro-USB cable, quick-start guide, and a warranty sheet.

Setup

Setting up the device is standard fare for any Android device I’ve ever used. After adding my Google account information, the Nexus 7 was ready to go. As you may have heard from various other sources, the device is fast and responsive. It loads apps and switches between browser tabs quickly. The screen quality is also very impressive. I have noticed, however, that it doesn’t rotate properly on the home screen, which is pretty annoying because charging it on a stand requires putting it on its side.

Google Nexus 7 – Screen Rotation Issue

Apps

It comes pre-installed with these apps:

Adobe Reader

Calculator

Calendar

Chrome

Clock

Currents

Drive

Earth

Settings

Superuser

Talk

Voice Search

Wallet

YouTube

One of the first things I wanted to do was install new apps. Off to the Play Store! Some apps I use on my Galaxy S2 mobile phone were not compatible with the tablet version of Android. Specifically, these are the ones I wanted to install but couldn’t:

Amazon

Grocery IQ

Urbanspoon

These are the apps I installed right off the bat:

Amazon Kindle

Bible

Bubble UPnP w/License

Dropbox

Facebook (again, I don’t remember if this one was pre-installed)

Flipboard

HootSuite

IMDb

Kayak

LinkedIn

Skype

Springpad

Swiftkey 3 (not the tablet edition)

TED

This American Life

Google Now

Google Now is a prominent part of the Jelly Bean OS on Nexus 7. When I unlock the screen, it takes the forefront. This can be disabled, but I may find better uses for Google Now as I use the device more. With Google Now, a search screen with widget-like info boxes are visible. When Google Now is open, I can speak the word “Google” to activate a voice search. Voice search has hit every search exactly right so far. It’s quite impressive, really.

Google Now Screen

Google Wallet

I have had difficulty using Google Wallet, however. On loading the app, some initial setup is required. I already have the Citi MasterCard required for use with Google Wallet. My first (several) attempts at setting this up, I was able to go through the entire process, but the final step of adding and confirming the card failed. During setup, the card number is validated as it’s typed in, so when I made a mistake, it let me know.

Google Wallet

Today I was finally able to successfully add a card to Google Wallet. An initial temporary limit of $100 was setup until I activated the full credit limit by using a code sent to my email. I don’t expect to be using my tablet to pay for groceries at the supermarket anytime soon, but I have the ability to do it if I wanted. And that’s enough for me.

As a sidenote, I look forward to getting this feature enabled for my Galaxy S2 soon. Very soon, please. Google and AT&T pay attention.

Google Play

Much has been made about the Nexus 7 on Jelly Bean and its optimization for Google Play. I received notice that a $25 credit to Google Play was available the same day the Nexus 7 shipped (July 17). When I turned the device on, these magazines were ready for download at no charge:

Popular Science, July 2012

Conde Nast Traveler, July 2012

Food Network Magazine, July/August 2012

Esquire, June/July 2012

Family Circle, July 2012

I also had these books ready at no charge:

Bourne Dominion, by Robert Ludlum

Nexus 7 Guidebook, by Google, Inc.

Of course, the other books I’ve purchased through Google Play previously were available for download as well

Lastly, a movie was ready to be played. Google gave me Transformers: Dark of the Moon, 2011 at no charge.

Sound

Audio quality isn’t terrible on the Nexus 7. It isn’t the best of any device I’ve heard, but it isn’t tinny like I expected.

Connectivity

Wireless b/g/n is fast and easy to configure. It connected to my D-Link DIR-655 with no trouble at all

The most obvious missing feature is a mini- or micro-SD slot. This is my only real complaint about the Nexus 7. While I will miss having an SD slot for expandable storage, I can run any of my media from the cloud.

3G or other cellular data is missing, but I don’t mind at all, particularly because it is designed for wi-fi use only. I don’t have to worry about using up my data allotment streaming music or video. Not everyone uses their tablet the same way I do, though, so this could be a deal-breaker.

Overall

The Nexus 7 seems to be a home run for Google. The build quality and specs of this tablet simply cannot be matched for this price. The minor failures of this tablet (lack of an SD slot and a cellular data option) are compensated for by the speed, great OS, and media-centric features available on the Nexus 7. Compared to other tablets in the 7″ form factor at this price, the Nexus 7 seems to be head and shoulders above the competition.

The doctors and practice management at Westside Gastrointestinal Specialists in Knoxville, Tennessee, were looking for a way to improve the overall look and feel of an existing website when they first began discussing a new website with Speak. Their previous website was built using a DIY platform, which was functional, but the people at Westside GI wanted to offer more to their patients.

In the preliminary discussions, it was determined that an 8-page website would be sufficient, as long as those 8 pages could include forms for patients to complete, a list of resources about medical conditions related to gastroenterology, and a set of procedures related to the services offered by Westside Gastrointestinal Specialists.

Speak recommended using a WordPress platform due to its ease of use on the backend and flexibility to fit a variety of page layouts. A professional design was chosen at the outset and development began. As the site began to take shape, an alternate design – Clockstone by CMSMasters – was chosen for a more attractive look that could be easily updated on the fly.

As development continued, the content of the website was carefully honed and crafted to be accessible by clients, with a selection of content in Spanish as well as English. A contact form was created to match the informational needs of office staff, and a library of informational resources was added to keep patients educated on gastrointestinal conditions.

The end result was a website that communicates the medical professionalism of Westside Gastrointestinal Specialists and provides patients and family with an excellent set of resources.

When The Mustard Seed Store first came to Speak for help with their website, they were working hard to build an e-commerce site on one of those platforms that is advertised on television. They were frustrated with the way it was setup, and felt restricted by the controls and restrictions that came with the platform. Put simply, The Mustard Seed needed an attractive and customizable platform to sell their handmade frames, gifts, and home decor items.

The first need was an attractive site that they could use for their retail customers to order and pay online. The second need was an alternate pricing structure for wholesale clients who would order in bulk.

After working through a few design possibilities, we settled on the Handmade E-Commerce design by Obox. It offered an attractive front-page gallery, shopping cart, sortable shop, and simple navigation. The design was created for WooCommerce, so this decision was driven by the design.

A few additional features were necessary to provide a true seamless checkout process. The UPS and USPS shipping options were added to give customers a number of choices for shipping. PayPal was added as a payment gateway because it’s a familiar and flexible online payment option with reasonable fees.

Wholesale checkout was added through the Wholesale Pricing plugin from IgniteWoo.com. The setup process for wholesale pricing through this plugin was simple, allowing the admin to setup pricing for individual items. It also removes taxation for wholesale clients, since they’re tax-exempt 99% of the time.

In all, The Mustard Seed Store received a flexible and beautiful e-commerce website that they’re proud to show to potential customers.

Most of the lending done with physical books has been among your circle of friends and family. This means you all get to read the same material and it’s good for discussion, but what if you’re interested in broadening your horizons and discovering new authors on the lending system?

Some libraries, including my local one, have an e-book lending program. What I’ve found, however, is that popular books have long waiting lists, so you might be four months out from reading that book for your group discussion or retreat.

E-books break down the traditional lending networks and offer a much wider variety of options to choose from. CNet.com posted an article yesterday about four services that offer the ability to loan and borrow e-books across the internet. Take a look at one (or all four) of these services. They all require free registration, so there’s little risk to signing up.

BookLending.com

eBookFling.com

LendingeBook.com

Lendle.com

The CNet article gives a more detailed breakdown of each service, but you can begin your book borrowing and lending with any of the above.
